The customary wooden dummy is quite bulky and requires a big hunk of liberty to set it up correctly for teaching. That’s fine if you have a big training hall, but you almost certainly don’t have that much space to devote to your training.

Sil Lum Tao Form – “small idea”

The opening form of Wing Chun, the Sil Lum Tao contains all the elementary actions of the system. The motions of the form are put into partner-drill form so as to appreciate their essential applications. In this phase of training, the student will study to relax the shoulders and elbows, expand a strong stance, and continue mental calm, all the while paying the greatest concentration to the particulars of the form. If one were to contrast Wing Chun to a language, the form itself would be the alphabet, while the maneuvers would be words.

Rotating on the Horse

One time the student has a polite sympathetic of Sil Lum Tao, he learns how to merge the motions with rotating on the horse. Rotating serves the reason of redirecting an opponent’s power, varying angles of attack, generating more punching power, and coordinating the higher and lower parts of the body into a combined complete.
