It is not necessary to assessment the components item for item in choosing a meal or preparation a menu. A well-balanced diet contains every the nutritious foods required for healthy growing children. Studies show that the body creates better use of nutrients when a variety of foods is eaten. Choice of foods from every of the following groups will usually provide the necessary nutritive:

(1) meat, fish, fowl, and eggs;

(2) milk and milk products;

(3) fruits and vegetables;

(4) cereals, breadstuffs, and miscellaneous foods. every day selection from these four basic groups promotes good eating habits, and these habits should be formed very near the beginning in childhood.

Teachers must remember that every one mothers do not cook the equal foods; so in addition to selection of foods from the various groups, there must be adjustments to national habits of eating. It would not be amiss for teachers to take a course in nutrition in order to acquire basic in order and learn how to stimulate interest in good eating practices.

Standards of Good Nutrition

What is good nutrition?

Good nutrition of every systems of the body establishes the basis for their good function. correct food is necessary in children and young adults for maintenance of good health, for continued growth, and for sensible physical activity. A well-nourished child grows and develops at an acceptable pace. He is brimful of power and life, interested in play, and appears relaxed. His eyes shine, his hair is sleek, his skin feels good and elastic, his coloring is usual, and he holds himself in good posture for his age. He is poised and self-confident, eats and sleeps well, gains weight and height and has fat under his skin—he is a healthy, healthy individual. If he remains healthy, he reaches puberty in average time, grows to maturity, and achieves his potential. After a few exposure to them, a teacher usually becomes fairly a connoisseur of healthy children. In brief, the criteria used by a educator in judging nutritional status are weight, appearance, and action or performance.

In evaluating weight, comparison of a child’s progress in height and weight with his own history record is desirable. The growth charts should be used and kept up to date with interval measurements. As long as there is a few gain, no anxiety is indicated. Failure to gain weight may occasion some speculation and an near the beginning recheck. some loss in weight should have an explanation and an investigation, if necessary. A recent illness or moving upset can explanation a lot of of the losers. Progressive loss of weight is serious and should be discussed with the school nurse and the relations. On the other hand, a child who lives mostly on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and carbonated beverages may well uphold average or excessive weight and still be malnourished. This does not mean that the more often than not accepted standards should not be used. Rather, there should be an appreciation of their interpretation. The parents whose child is labeled as healthy according to weight standards simply may be given a false sense of security. Evaluation of these standards for growth and growth and for nutritional status has been discussed under Growth plus Development.

It is from time to time difficult to make a decision concerning a child’s nutritional status. A total health examination may be necessary. There may even be disagreement among physicians. A good deal of in order may be necessary before a conclusion is reached. The various factors which have an effect on nutrition (Causes of Malnutrition) must be in use into consideration.

An expert eye can size up a youngster and watch his every day performance. Does the child look thin and pale and have prominent ribs? Does he have rolls of fat? Even if each rib can be counted, is the child healthy, active, and full of good humor? Even if the child appears to have an standard weight, is he flabby, listless, slumped in posture, and does he have circles under his eyes?

A study of the weight line on his enlargement chart, inspection of the child himself, and observation of his activities should be guides in the evaluation of good nutrition.

Neither the classroom educator nor the director of the school physical condition program is expected to be an expert on glandular disorders. Yet an understanding of a quantity of of the disorders that may likely be found in a school population can be of value to the educator and to particular children. Parents and the teacher’s school superiors hold in high regard the educator who understands children with special problems.

Diabetes mellitus:

Although it is generally careful a disease of later life since the average age of the more than 1,500,000 diabetic persons in the United States is 55 years, diabetes mellitus does occur among school-age children and infrequently among preschool children. Medical authorities point out that for all four known cases, three unrecognized cases of diabetes exist.

Most persons who have diabetes can keep well and lead healthy and useful lives. Careful attention to the physician’s instructions can safeguard the subject’s health. In this admiration the school can be of appreciable service to the diabetic student.

Diabetes mellitus is typically the result of a deficiency in the insulin output of the islands of Langerhans in the forward pituitary gland. A deficiency of these hormones results in a high level of blood sugar (hyperglycemia) and sugar in the urine (glycosuria). Lassitude and weariness result; there is a marked thirst after meals, and, with the subsequent consumption of water, there is recurrent urination. Increases hunger, a drawn expression, and a loss of weight may occur. The mouth is dry: the language red and sore. Dry skin, itching, eczema, and boils occur. The eyes are affected, and neuritis, numbness and itchy of the hands and feet occur. Marked weakness results from the incapability of the muscles to use available fuel.

a quantity of diabetic students may be on a restricted diet, which may be enough to control the condition. The physician or parents should inform the school of the set diet and routine for physical activity. The teacher should guide the child in adherence to the prescription. In the absence of such in order, the teacher will have to regard the child as any usual member of the group.

Children under insulin action will probably receive their injection at least an hour before coming to school. The climax of the effect may occur a short time after arrival at school. Or it may appear late in the day, and a low blood sugar level (hypoglycemia) may result. The condition is usually spoken of as insulin shock and is characterized by trembling, faintness, palpitation, unsteadiness, excessive perspiration, and hunger. carroty juice which contains carbohydrates, products revival in a few minutes. a few children carry a supply of carbohydrates and begin to swallow them immediately upon the appearance of symptoms. The other children soon accept the procedure, and it becomes part of the school life. It is analytic of a mentally hygienic school environment.

Hyperthyroidism: Youngsters with a basal metabolic rate above plus 10 may be considered to have a hyperthyroid state. During childhood the children are healthy, thin, but strikingly robust, active, energetic, high-strung, and perhaps nervous and highly excitable, they never appear to tire and seldom are ill. As adolescents they may be restless, energetic people who are perpetual doers and workers. They may be annoyed and impulsive. Life is at a maximum function for these persons from early in the morning until late at night. To be idle is their biggest trial.

The require for a routine or plan for everyday living is urgent with some of these children. In this, guidance from the educator can be helpful. To harness this power and direct it into productive channels is the objective. Routinizatoin of the day helps to slow down the dizzy pace.

Persons with excessive hyperthyroidism clearly need medical supervision.

Hypothyroidism: Children with extreme hypothyroidism (cretinism) do not be present at school, but children with marked thyroxin deficiency are present in our classrooms. They are disinterested and slow, need steady coaxing and forcing, are chronically late, and do poorly in their schoolwork. They perspire very little, have a slow response time, fatigue easily, sleep heavily, and are often accused of being lazy loafers. Life is a real effort for these children. In practice, educators should exercise patience and strive to understand the child’s limitations. A duty-possessed educator who lacks understanding could do infinite harm of the day.

Endocrine therapy can do much for these students. Frequently action transforms them into alert, energetic, active, and bright eyed children who for the first time, as expressed by one of them, “really know what it is like to live.” every now and then at puberty, nature brings about this sudden reversal from a dull, lackadaisical child to a highly animated, vivacious adolescent.

My large question is: Why does man play and engage in sport and exalt his theory and practice as physical education? This is a large question and though I will fall short of a full reply I have benefited from searching through the literature in mission of the answer. Let me start with what we know best, with sport and play in our own America.

In the beginning, Puritans frowned on sport in all-purpose and on Sunday sport in particular. In the language of the fresh England Primer, “Your deeds to mend, God attend.” In the North, the sporting germ was lost on rocky Puritan ground. In the West, sport, play, and dancing to the fiddle were restricted to house-raising revels. In the South, Virginians copied English Cavaliers in fencing, horse racing, and fox hunt. Early American sport was at first not of the common people or of the border. In the Middle Atlantic states and elsewhere boxing, card playing—even baseball—were an upper-class prerogative. In 1845, when members of the exclusive Knickerbockers Club in Manhattan played baseball, it was a genteel game for gentlemen.

But times were altering and between 1840 and 1880 America leaped from fifth to first place in the middle of industrial nations. Immigrants poured in by the tens of millions, half of them Germans and Irishmen familiar to the relaxed European Sunday. The Puritan Sabbath retreated previous to the laboring man’s taste fro Sunday picnics and ball games in little towns, and beer gardens and saloons in big cities. With the frontier closed, rural agrarianism in decline, and urban industrialism triumphant, sport rose swiftly. One historian, Frederic Logan Paxton, has suggested that sport was the safety valve that replace the closed frontier. Surely in 1885, when the International Young Men’s Christian Association founded Springfield College in Massachusetts as a preparation school for physical education teacher, sport in America had reached the age of consent. And by the turn of the century as it enlarged to include each known game, sport was already feeding back ideas to serve the American drive fro speed and competence.

Sport had a marked result on social custom and technological advance in late nineteenth century America. Frederick W. Taylor was a doubles tennis winner in 1881. Not long afterwards he established the time and movement study group and fathered the scientific management rebellion. It was in golf and t3ennis that he first saw the value of analysis of motion, the significance of methodical training, and the worth of time study.

Leland Stanford, president of the Central Pacific push and benefactor of Stanford University, bet a friend $25,000 that a trotter in gait lifted all four hoofs off the ground. He hired a photographer to show his point. Photographer Muybridge set up trip wires for a 24-camera-shot sequence. He proved Stanford right and laid the basis for motion picture photography. The first profitable motion picture ever shown on a screen was a six round boxing bout in May, 1895. it was the filming of boxing events that took movement pictures out of the peep show and into big time.

Radio, too, received impetus from sports. As near the beginning as 1899, when Marconi desperately needed cash to perfect his wireless, the New York Herald paid him $5,000 to transmit via radio the finish of the American Cup yacht race.

Above every one, the bicycle had large influence. They cycling craze took hold after improved English bicycles appeared in the Philadelphia Centennial of 1876. Lady riders shortened their skirts and feminists had latest support.

The league of American Wheelmen, a million strong at its climax, campaigned for better roads. By 1900 half the states had passed legislation for improved highways. From improved bicycles came the ball bearing, wire wheels, hub-breaking, the pneumatic tire, and variable speed transmission from which came automatic gear shift in cars.

The bike industry developed tubular nickel steel and played a key role in rising the motor boat, the motorcycle, and the automobile. Orville Wright was a bicycle racer and with his brother Wilbur ran a bicycle repair shop in Dayton, Ohio.

Henry Ford’s first cars were racers. He needed monetary backing; to get moneyed people interested he needed publicity. Racing car winners gave him the public notice he sought. The man Ford got to race his 80 horse-power “999” engine was a professional bicycle rider named Barney Old field.

After the turn of the century sport hit America with a bang. Teddy Roosevelt’s Cabinet was often called the “Tennis Cabinet.” By 1919 sport represented an annual expenditure of $73 million. By the 1920’s, aided by radio, the spectator boom was on. Baseball, football, and boxing drew huge crowds. During the Depression in the 1930’s the trend turned toward member sports. The Works Progress Administration alone built 10,000 tennis courts, 1817 handball courts, 805 swimming pools, 318 ski trails, and 254 golf courses. National and state parks and fish and game sanctuaries helped extol the outdoor life.

As straight participation rose, personal attendance declined. Radio and television in our time have aid this trend. Big-time sport has become an entertainment spectacle, set up and set for home listening and viewing. Gate receipts have drooped; the crowds just do not come some more; advertising has become the moneyed middleman. Wrestling, boxing, baseball, and football have been turned into parlor sports.

Conversely, swimming, boating, skiing, camping, bowling, skating—in short, most participant sports, whether confidential, school, or company sponsored—are on the rise. If, as I think, it is a healthy trend, then how can we create creative use of the participant trend to produce bodily stronger and more mentally alert Americans? We are back to my original question—why does man play and engage in sport and honor the theory and practice of sport and dignify the theory and do of sport as physical education? Let me approach a few theoretical answers through a brief historical survey.

In the beginning the amoeba stirred and every one its descendants moved and crawled and ran and roamed the face of the earth to find favorable life conditions. For man, from the beginning, the physical development was imperative since efficient society meant survival. The more efficient man, bodily and mentally, led others out of danger. The root meaning of the word learning is “to lead forth.”

When danger was for the instant averted and food enough was at hand, prudence may have heading for the channeling of surplus energy into preparation for tomorrow’s challenges. From this surplus power during earliest times of brief leisure, in imitation of previous battle, and in exultant hope for future achievement, youth may have learned to engage in sport and to play. anything the origin in the dim past, sport, play, and physical development are part of man’s heritage and the necessary complement to his mind’s search for understanding and sense.

Civilization of obstetricians and Gynecologists of Pakistan set a discussion group on Maternal Mortality audit and interactive session on the occasion of global Mother’s Day here at Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical campus auditorium hall Larkana on Sunday.

Aging is a normal route that is not just permanent, but also necessary. As time passes and your body begins to age, the transforms in the skin and the hair are most marked. It is maybe because of this that a lot of turn towards anti aging skin creams.
It has been observed that racially, those with darker skin tones do not drop their youth as apparently as those who have fairer skin. There are numerous anti aging techniques that one may use. Facelifts and laser resurfacing are a few of the more costly method.

Nevertheless, because anti aging creams are cheap and more eagerly available in the market, they are more well-liked than some other anti aging method. In a recent scientific research, the emissions left by a snail were studied to search its rejuvenating properties. It was found that this emission contained essential enzymes known as Superoxide Dismutase and Glutathione. These are regenerative antioxidants which relieve free radicals and encourage the rearrangement of the action cytoskeleton. Moreover, these enzymes also rouse fibroblast, causing the skin to seem younger and.

Photo exposure is one of the main reasons of skin degeneration. It has been seen that products which are based on Cryptomphalus Aspera are outstanding for treat skin which has been scratched due to photo exposure. Since the skin’s defense is based largely on the capable functioning of superoxide dismutase, an effectual anti aging cream would completely encourage the enzymes. There is a considerable depletion of antioxidants in skin, which has been damaged because of photo-aging. When the antioxidant level is low, the free hasty oxygen radicals are not removed and may devastate biomembranes.

There are tissue proteins known as Tissue Inhibitors of Metalloproteinases. These are dependable for reversing the growth of aging to a few extents. It was found that the secretions of the snail are able to stimulate these narrow proteins too. Such enzymatic actions cause a decrease in the natural damage that is continued by skin. These behaviors also delay the signs of aging by dropping degeneration.

Most makeup formulations hold retinoid and antioxidants which aspire to slow down the levels of superoxide dismutase considerably. Moreover, beauty products which enclose these enzymes have been studied to have a better effect in dropping the depth of the wrinkles on the skin. Other products in the anti aging creams may let the skin to stay hydrated for a longer period of time, growing the moisture retaining skill of the skin.

Life is a continuous development, not a series of sharply marked-off stages. Yet quite distinctive periods in development can be recognized. Sharp cleavages between the periods do not exist; in fact one period or stage overlaps or dovetails into another.

Infancy and early Childhood (birth to 5 years)

The period of infancy and early on childhood has been variously called the self-centered period, egocentric period, autoerotic period, narcissistic period, and self-centered period. Behavior is largely biological. The child is highly self-centered. He regards himself as the center of the whole world about him. Even a 3-year old child, without restraint, grasps for all before him. He will play by himself 90% of the time, even with a mate playing by his side. At the age of 5years he still will play by himself 70% of the time.

To create a reasonable change in the years to come the child must learn to deny him a few things, to respect the interests and wishes of others. Perhaps the most successful conditioning in adjustment self-interest to social requirements occurs at this period.

Too much expression of the personality at this stage in growth may result in a selfish, ruthless, domineering type of personality in later years. Too much repression at this period may lead to excessive timidity, reticence, and withdrawal in later years. Or, when adolescence is attained, a revolt against restraint may express itself in aggressive asocial conduct. The solution lies in a cooperation or middle course of not too much expression and not too much repression. The youngster must study that most things are permissible when they are not harmful or harmful to others.

It should be pointed out that, whereas independence is manifest before the age of 5 years, the character mold has not been set for all time. Omissions in rearing the child to this age can be compensated for or corrected in following years. Yet serious failure in the socialization of the child during the first five determining years becomes progressively trickier to overcome.

Middle Childhood (6 to 10 years)

The period of center childhood is rightly termed the individualistic period. The socialize effect of five years of association with human beings, chiefly those of the same age, has reduced the intensity of self-interest. Yet while the youngster of this stage is not the highly egocentric person of the preceding period, he has but a surface interest in others. He is decidedly and individualist who prefers his own association in his various enterprises. He may obtain a friend, but it is just for a day; next week it will be another. Attachments are transitory.

This is the time when a child should be given opportunity for developing a few degrees of self-reliance, dependability, regularity, industry, and responsibility, every asset in effective social adjustment and character integration. Fortunate indeed is the youngster whose training at this period includes training in various skills. Whether the skills are in music, art, handicrafts, sports, or other areas of common interest, their most value lies in providing avenues for social expression and acceptance in the years ahead.

Extremely essential at this stage of life is the development of a high level of self-regard of feeling of worthiness, based upon reasonable success and accomplishment and an expressed appreciation by others. The youngsters should have amazing to live up to rather than something to live down. It provides the nucleus for the growth of a positive type of character.

Later Childhood (11 to 15 years)

Known as the gang or hemophilic period, the afterward childhood stage displays a redirection of expression of the personality. Self-interest is now divided with loyalty to a group of the same sex. At time the primary look of loyalty is to the group, self-interest being relegated to a minor role. No demonstrated biological basis exists to account for the group and segregation of the sexes. A possible details lies in the wide divergence of interests manifest at this stage. At 12 years of age girls are physiologically and communally almost two years in advance of boys and have more mature and more extensive interests. Although these boys and girls have some interests in common, members of every sex tend to acquire a multitude of distinctive primary interests.

Way of this gregarious tendency into healthy channels will help the youngsters to attain concepts and constructive experiences in collaboration and group action, attributes necessary throughout existence in most parts of the world.

A passive attention in the opposite sex rules out any huge interest in “punch-and-wafer” sociability, but social relations as by-products of daily activities are of sufficient value to be significant in character development. Core-creation provides wholesome social experience for the youngster.

Whereas the sex grouping obvious at this stage tends to decline as a primary characteristic in adult years, a propensity toward group segregation of the sexes continues throughout life. Common male interests still keep the grown-up man interested in masculine groups. Likewise, although a women’s primary expression may be heading for to her husband and family, she still will seek the groups and group action of her own sex.

Youth (16 to 20 years)

Adolescence is often term the period of heterosexuality because of the obvious interest in the opposite sex. This interest, although at first rather generalized, with maturity tends to become listening carefully on a type in the opposite sex and typically finally centers on one individual.

To many observers adolescence is considered a sort of pathological stage in which deviation and abnormality are the rule rather than the exception. While some special aspects of adjustment are most pronounced at this period of life, the youth period is best described as a transition period is best described as a change period between childhood and adulthood. In this period the human being at times exhibits the consistency of maturity and at other times the inconsistency of immaturity. If more maladjustments and crises occur during this period than at some previous time, it is usually because unresolved problems that have been mounting merely come together at this time with the individual’s newly displayed self-assertion.

Adolescence is more than a biological alter; it involves mental, social, and other changes in the individual’s make-up. It is not a sudden overnight reversal but a slow transition, varying from individual to individual in time of onset and rate of transform.

Youth is a period of transition from the dependence of childhood to the self-government of adulthood to the self-government of adulthood. It is a period of emancipation in which the youngster wishes to be recognized as a self-governing individual in his own right. Self-assertion, willpower, and independence of action disturb the parents who still think of their youthful son or daughter as a child.

Sometimes this drive for emancipation is carried to the great of outright revolt against parents, teachers, and even society itself. It results in the “angry young man and young woman” who appear to get a certain questionable type of attention and recognition. They seem to get a certain inner gratification from challenging all that exists. Some of them may become openly antisocial. Tragically they often pay for these early on forays by being unaccepted throughout their lives. They find complexity in developing friendships. They find their choice of a possible wedding partner decidedly limited. Even wedding turns out badly because of their belligerent character.

Youth with this tendency should take a painstaking inventory of them, immediately initiate action to dissolve this belligerence in their makeup, and proceed on a latest philosophy that life is not one continuous warfare. It is a substance of give and take, live and let live, and alteration and adaptation to a lot of people, factors, and problems. We live in an imperfect world of imperfect people, and the skill to appreciate people in spite of their imperfections must be developed by all who would live efficiently and enjoyably in a multifaceted society of unique personalities.

Life moves into progressive complexity for the adolescent. He moves swiftly into a more multifaceted adult world, without an adult’s experience. However, an 18 year old youth is typically natively as intelligent as he will ever be. His intellect enables him to solve a myriad of problems, sometimes with total success, other times only partially, sometimes with satisfaction, and still other times with disturbance.

Youth is extremely sensitive and idealistic period—imaginative, enthusiastic, and flexible. This idealism is frequently a factor in failure and disturbance. Yet no capable counselor would advise an adolescent to lower his ideals apart from when too huge a disparity exists between realism and the ideal.

For a high stage of adjustment now and in the future the mental health needs of the adolescent can be summarized briefly:

(1) Status within his social group,

(2) Group membership and active participation,

(3) Maturing standard of values,

(4) Major purpose in life,

(5) Enjoyment through success,

(6) Positive motivation in self-regard, and

(7) self-recognition in growth.

Religious conflicts of youth occur when the easy faith of childhood is inadequate to meet the needs of the more mature person. The need for spiritual growth and maturity indicates the solution.

Young Adulthood (21 to 35 years)

In the period of young adulthood the final goal of the personality is a place in the sun, but the immediate goal is to get a foot on the first rung of the ladder. The personality is directed toward the establishment of a certain degree of advantage and safety, social as well as economic. Although the emotional mold is quite well established by the age of 20 years, the personalities express it through fresh found motivations, with variations in the characteristic emotional patterns.

Failure to attain reasonable communal and economical status and safety by the age of 30 years is often a portent of maladjustment ahead. It does not necessarily mean mental disorder, criminality, or other extreme states. It typically means that the individual never seems to be able to catch up to the civilization in which he finds himself. He is on the borderline of normality, never fairly able to catch up with the demands of life. He is mute evidence of the need for the growth early in life of self-regard, self-reliance, and impartiality.

Middle Adulthood (35 to 60 years)

During middle adulthood the personality is directed toward a status of worldly significance. It is a period of aggressive offense, striving for the goal of a top place in the sun. Vocational, social, family, spiritual, and every other relationship tend to be pointed toward this self-realization. Frustrations, failures, and disappointments may increase aggressiveness, which is expressed at times in asocial conduct, or the goals may be customized and self-gratification found in lesser stations or in a compromise with ideals. Fortunate is the person who learns to attain effectiveness and pleasure in life, as things are, instead of bewailing because things are not precisely as be he would want them to be.

Later Adulthood (60—-)

In afterward adulthood the self typically has attained a few status from which is does not want to decline. The personality assumes a defensive position to retain whatever place in the sun it may have. To preserve the status quo gives security and stability to the ego. Adjust products uncertainty and the need for readjustment, both of which tend to become more disturbing and trickier with advancing years. Clashes of interest between individuals in this age period and those in the middle-adult period can be predictable in the dynamic competitive American scene.

That which is conventional as the normal by society is typical mental health. It is not the average, nor is it a definite entity. It is a variety into which the most number of persons fit who are regarded as living within the suitable bounds of social conduct. No two individuals in a group are exactly alike; yet every of the group may be regarded as usual if all fit into the general patterns of conduct and adjustment conventional by society.

It should be pointed out that merely being in the usual range is not an index of a desirable level of health. A person asleep may be almost perfectly adjusted to his environment and his needs. The desirable goal is a dynamic adjustment, one of positive accomplishment and a resulting high level of enjoyment.

Success and enjoyment are relative not absolute factors. So too, mental health is relative, and within the standard range one finds various degrees of mental and emotional well-being, a few individuals live with a high degree of effectiveness. They have extensive plans and goals and experience achievement in their daily living with a minimum of friction and a maximum of enjoyment. They do not live completely. They experience failure, frustration, and disappointment but to a minor degree. These are the people with an outstanding level of mental health who freely and efficiently use their endowment in making a world that provides personal satisfaction in harmony with environment requirements. They rate an in mental health.

Individual with a good level of mental health do not knowledge the high level of adjustment attained by members of the brilliant group. This group attains a creditable excellence of mental hygiene but one that is below the attainment of the first group. Doubtless many of them are capable of achieving the top group through understanding and tangible application to improvement. This is perhaps the B group.

In the fair or C group are that vast majority of usual individuals who experience neither a huge deal of friction and conflict nor much accomplishment or enjoyment. They live rather passive, uninteresting, uninspired lives. A lot of attain just half of their potential accomplishment in adjustment and a smaller portion of their share of enjoyment. It is in this group that most can be done to get better the level of mental health. Improvement can come through helping the individual acquire a more extensive and intensive understanding of mental health and its translation into a tangible program of improvement. Even an improvement of 10% would add really to the individual’s life.

Adjustment in life is not an simple or a easy task. It is a task requiring constant application because, in effect, a person adjusts to four different worlds—the physical world, the social world, the spiritual world, and his own perfect world.

In pioneer days perhaps the most challenge to the individual was his adjustment to the physical forces in his existence. However, in modern America, although physical forces still stand for a factor of importance in human adjustment, technological advances have reduced the complexity of adapting to the physical world a highly consistent world. a child learns what to expect when he falls. It is always the equal. He learns that heat and cold are consistent in their effects. The very consistency of the physical world creates one experience highly valuable in adjustment to a somewhat similar situation in the future.

No such consistency exists in the social world. The complex socioeconomic structure of modern America require and extremely high level of human flexibility uncertainties and inconsistencies inherent in a highly developed spirited society lead to frequent frustration and even futility, which are constant obstacles to mental health. The social matrix is one in which a vast maze of practices, mores, values, and standards exists, often with little but highly important shades of differences, every tending to create personal adjustment more difficult. A child must learn that what is acceptable behavior in the home may not be satisfactory in school.

The grownup is necessary to create different finely discriminating responses to two outwardly identical situations. Sensitivity to discrimination is acquired through the maturation of personality, which enables the individual to create effective adaptations with a maximum of effectiveness and a minimum of friction and conflict.

The most central factors in any person’s environment are other people. An individual must create a specific adjustment to each person’s personality. Yet the task is not an impossible one. Although people are every one different, they are not so tremendously different. One can acquire the skill to adapt to individuals as one learns to evaluate what motivates human conduct in the normal channels of human relationships.

If in the metaphysical sense faith is regarded as one’s response to the unknown in life, all person is challenged to create a spiritual adjustment. As an individual matures in other respects, he finds an expanding need for growth in his spiritual adjustment. With this need will sometimes arise a considerable lag in maturation, resulting in conflict and perhaps brief disturbance, which motivates the individual to give proportionately more notice to this particular sphere of adjustment.

Somewhat interwoven with the spiritual in man’s existence is his idealistic world. It is the level of life to which he aspires. Or perhaps, like the ship captain who never hopes to get to a star yet is guided by it, the individual sets his perfect as a goal toward which he may strive but never reach. Often such an ideal motivates individuals to a hither understanding of their abilities. However, too huge a disparity between the island of the ideal and the mainland of reality may result in frustration and despair.

The eye is a sphere-shaped body tranquil of sure coats, and humors of a more or less fluid constancy. Fate has blessed us with two such organs, which is a fortunate stipulation when their weakness and effortlessness of permanent damage are remembered. The eye rests in a bowl-shaped hole, which is collected of portions of quite a few bones of the skull, connected jointly. In the rear of the socket are a few openings, one of which, called the optic foramen, serves mostly for the admission of the optic nerve as it passes from the brain to the eye.

The hole is lined by optimistic membranes and other tissues, portion as a soft and elastic bed in which the eyeball, without impairing its reality, rests and moves.

Amongst these tissues is found a double membrane, originating in the later portion of part of the skull showing the course or socket in which the eyeball moves A, optic foramen through which the optic nerve passes. The socket. Passing onward, it envelops the eyeball, being slackly attached to it at its circumference. It then doubles on itself, passes backward, and becomes reattached near the point of its source. This membranous sac is called Tendon’s or Bonnet’s capsule, and forms a concavity in which the eyeball is held in a way alike to what is known as a ball-and-socket joint. The eye is enthused in diverse directions by six muscles. Four of these are known respectively as the better rectus, which is attached at the upper portion of the globe; the lesser rectus, which is close at the lower portion; and the center rectus and external rectus, which are attached severally at the inner and outer portions of the eye- ball. As well these, there are the improved and inferior slanting muscles, which are at-t9, ched at the outer portion of the eyeball.

With the exception of the lesser oblique, they every one originate around the optic foramen, at the huge rear of the orbit, and, passing ahead through the tissues of Tenon’s capsule, turn out to be attached as just described. The lesser slanted muscle originates in the lower inner and forward piece of the orbit, passes along to one side under the inferior rectus, to become inserted under the sinew of the outside rectus, thus partly surrounding the sphere.
